KiloWatts for Humanity

ABOUT

Mission: To improve people’s lives by providing access to electricity and fostering the development of sustainable businesses. Our volunteers offer mentorship and resources to empower less economically developed communities for lasting change.

KiloWatts for Humanity (KWH) has been implementing international rural electrification projects since 2009 and was incorporated as a non-profit organization in January 2015. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, unified by the common desire to end energy poverty around the world.

KWH builds on the past success and experience of faculty, staff and students at Seattle University that are committed to sustainable energy development projects. Our volunteers are dedicated, multi-disciplinary and experienced in development work. Many have past experience with Engineers Without Borders, the IEEE Power & Energy Society and IEEE Smart Villages.

SERVICES

ELECTRIFICATION

KWH engages with communities and local NGO partners to provide appropriate electricity service where it is needed most. We take a "sustainability first" approach, and only consider projects that we believe can be sustainable.

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS

We identify and assess potential communities, raise funds, design the technical specifications, and develop the associated business and training plans. We prefer working with in-country vendors and contractors whenever possible for implementation.

REMOTE MONITORING

The KWH team remotely monitors projects after implementation and conducts follow-up visits when appropriate. We regularly publish and present our designs and lessons learned to help the broader energy development community.
