LIGHT UP THE NIGHT SIGNATURE BEVERAGES
Thirsty for a way to get into a fundraising mood? KWH volunteer and mixologist Prof. McLean Sloughter has curated and crafted two beverages inspired by the flavors and tastes of Zambia. Have one (or more), sit back, and enjoy our 8th Annual Light Up the Night virtual fundraiser on April 30th 6:00-7:30PM (Pacific)
MALAWIAN SHANDY (non-alcoholic)
Our first drink is a very popular non-alcoholic drink in Zambia, the Malawian Shandy. Start by pouring a bit of orange juice into a glass (about two ounces). Fill the glass with ice. Then add equal amounts of ginger ale and lemon-lime soda to fill the glass. If you'd like, add a few drops of Angostura bitters (contains alcohol) on top of the drink. If you’re feeling fancy, add an orange slice as a garnish.
SOLAR SHANDY
Our second drink is something we’re calling a Solar Shandy. It keeps the same citrus and spice flavors of the Malawian Shandy, but mixes them with Irish whiskey, a very popular liquor choice in Zambia. In a tumbler, combine 1 ounce of Irish whiskey, 1/2 ounce of orange liqueur (triple sec, Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or something similar), 1/4 ounce of lemon juice, and 1/4 ounce of lime juice. Stir together, then add a few ice cubes. Top the glass with ginger ale (about 5 ounces, depending on the size of your glass). Dash a few drops of Angostura bitters on top, and garnish with a lemon twist.
