Hambelele is a small village in the southern province of Zambia. The solar kiosk was installed in October, 2024, with the help of the local organizations Caritas Monze, and KiloWatts for Humanity. The approximately 800 square foot kiosk is owned and operated by the Hambelele Youth Group (young adults). The kiosk provides convenient access to electricity, as the town is far from main cities.
The community assisted the KiloWatts for Humanity with manual labor and gathering local materials to build the kiosk. The kiosk uses a 13 kilowatt solar array to power a 25 kilowatthour lithium ion battery bank. The kiosk provides electricity to the community's refrigerators, which store fish and meat.
